Since the 1980’s, landfills have been installing systems to collect landfill gas. The EPA has created New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) emission guidelines for solid waste landfills.
These regulations require landfill gas to be collected at landfills that have a potential capacity of more than 2.5 metric tons of waste and have the potential to emit more than 50 metric tons a year of non-methane organic compounds.
These regulations affect between 600-700 landfills which is approximately 18% of the landfills in the country. Collegiate Clean Energy and its partners focus efforts on smaller landfills which may not fall under the NSPS regulations, and yet cumulatively emit millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions every year into the atmosphere.
